On January 30th, the Hamburg Girls Wrestling team traveled to watch a Division 1 women’s wrestling dual at Lehigh University. After sharing a team dinner at a buffet, the wrestlers arrived at Grace Hall ready to experience college level freestyle wrestling.
Lehigh took the mat against Presbyterian College. As each match progressed it showed the Hamburg girls what it takes to be a Division 1 wrestler. For Hamburg, however, one moment stood out above the rest. When Shannon Govern stepped onto the mat at 131 pounds, it meant more than just another match. A former Hamburg student is now achieving big goals.
Although Lehigh ultimately fell just short in final team score, the night was an important moment for Hamburg. Seeing Shannon wrestle with division 1 wrestlers was “Inspiring” said Sarah Paxton, a first year wrestler on the Hamburg girls team and pushes her to do more in the sport.
