Summer is just around the corner, and statistically, people will adopt hermit crabs in the late summer. Some people think that hermit crabs are simple and easy to care for pets, as that is how they are advertised. This is not the case; hermit crabs are complex and need a full diet. Experts would recommend not adopting a hermit crab unless there is a correct setup and food for their diet.
Hermit crabs need to live in at least a 20-gallon tank; the tank should be long enough to allow for travel, around 30’’. The substrate should be 1:5 sand to coconut substrate. Hermit crabs need to have two water dishes, one of fresh water and the other of salt water. However, it is important to note that it can not be table salt; it is recommended to get “Instant Ocean” as it has the correct instructions and is balanced. Hermit crabs require a heated and humid environment to survive, which usually means using a heat pad and regularly monitoring humidity levels. Make sure that there are multiple extra shells of all sizes per crab.
Hermit crabs also need to have a balanced diet. For fresh foods, they should have things like fruits and vegetables. A source of protein, nuts and grains, crushed eggshells, leaf litter, and driftwood. Also, make sure that the foods hermit crabs are eating are safe for small creatures, as there are foods that will hurt them.
Hermit crabs are very social creatures and should never be bought alone. This could make them sad and lead to “extreme stress,” which will actually kill them. Do not be worried if the little creature is burrying themself. Hermit crabs go through a process called molting, and they should not be disturbed at all. It is a process where hermit crabs shed their outer shell so they can grow. It is an uncomfortable experience, and they should be as comfortable as possible.
Hermit crabs are complex creatures and require a lot of care. Make sure to do research, prepare that habitat, and get all supplies before adopting one. They can live up to 30 years with the proper care.
