Delayna Grim – 9
February 28, 1996, the day that forever changed Alanis Morrissette’s career as we know it. She had won her first Grammy for her newly released album Jagged Little Pill. At the time of her achievement, she was the youngest artist to win an award for Album of the Year. She was only 21 years old at the time. She had successfully not only won a Grammy, but also solidified female rock history by bringing forth lyrics of feminine rage and challenging song writing expectations of the time. Her performance of her song “You Oughta Know” set history with her strong profane language remaining mostly untouched. The studio track features Flea and Dave Navarro of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, however her performance at the Grammy’s was joined by the late Taylor Hawkins.
Over her impressive 20+ year career, she has racked up another six grammy’s including one in 2021 for the musical that her first album is based on. The album became an instant broadway hit just adding another thing to her impressive resume. She is also to be thanked for inspiring them and being an influence when writing emotionally blunt songs. These are some of the biggest pop names like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish, pop-rock stars like P!nk and Kelly Clarkson and indie musicians breaking into the mainstream like Phoebe Bridgers. 20 years ago, 21 year old Alanis Morrisette accepted her first grammy not knowing what would come next. But ultimately what came after that was a career full of awards and accolades and many, many inspired musicians.
