As the 2025-2026 school year enters the final stretch, it is common that the fourth quarter feels like a weird combination of pressure and possibility as grades are starting to become solid remembrances of the year, testing is approaching, and summer suddenly does not seem that far away. Even though it might be tempting to check out mentally and give up for the remainder of the year, the last quarter is often seen as the most important time of the year to stay focused and organized.
Freshman Lily Yoder offered a more realistic mindset going into the final quarter of the school year, which is to prepare for failure, because “you won’t be perfect, that’s a guarantee,” and rather than seeing mistakes as something to avoid, she treats them as part of the process. Her advice to simply “lock in” reflects the idea of fully committing during these last few weeks, which means it is recommended to minimize distractions and stay focused on work and class. Her perspective highlights that success is not always about being perfect, but rather about discipline and learning from any setbacks or mistakes.
Delayna Grim, also a freshman, takes a more laid-back approach to the final quarter of the school year, as she explains that she “doesn’t really prepare mentally,” but instead focuses on doing what she can in the moment. Her goal is simple: to try her best and hope for the best, as long as she passes. Even though her mindset may not be as structured, it shows how many students may cope with the pressure the final quarter brings, but by focusing on getting through it one assignment at a time rather than overthinking every outcome, it can certainly help decrease that pressure.
Balancing mental and physical health is essential to make the final quarter of the year the most meaningful one. Staying involved in extracurriculars and other activities, getting enough sleep, and taking breaks when they are needed can help prevent excess stress from building up. When students maintain their mental and physical health, it is proven that they can perform better academically as well.
The final quarter of the school year is more than simply a countdown to the long-needed summer break. It is more so an opportunity to finish this school year strong, reflect on the progress that was made, and set the tone for what is to come, even if this year is the last for the seniors of the school. With a little bit of preparation and a fit mindset, students are more capable of making the most of these final weeks and head into summer knowing that this year had received their best effort.
