At HAHS, LEO Club, the student division of the Lions Club, meets every club day B. Members do many different things such as helping at PTO meetings, face-painting at football and basketball games, running stands at the Charity basketball game, but they also sell roses for Valentine’s day.
Silk roses have been decided to be bought instead of real roses because due to it still being snow season, if students and staff are out of school the roses will die. Also, then the recipients can save the roses instead of getting rid of them because the rose(s) died.
This year, LEO Club sold silk roses for $1 in the colors white, light pink, dark pink, and red. They sold the roses between January 28 to February 4. In total, LEO Club sold approximately 75 roses: 30 white, 15 light pink, 15 dark pink, and 15 red. Roses will be delivered to the recipient’s homeroom on February 12.
In a school-wide survey, most of the students did not buy roses, but the ones who did really enjoyed it. It was about equal on who they bought roses for between friends or a boyfriend or girlfriend. Some also bought them for teachers. Kimberly Wieber says “It was very easy to do.” This is another reason why so many students enjoyed buying them, it was a quick, simple process to be a sweet surprise to make someone’s day.
The money that was raised from selling the roses will be used towards the LEO Club Charity basketball game and Fall Fest stands, more face-painting at sporting events, and to continue selling roses every year.
