The idea of starting a speech and debate team at Hamburg Area High School is beginning to spark conversation among students interested in new ways to get involved. Speech and debate programs can help students strengthen public speaking skills, build confidence, and learn how to express their ideas clearly. As interest in academic-focused clubs continues to grow, some students believe a team like this could be a valuable addition to the school community.
Junior Molly Fox believes the opportunity would connect directly to what students already experience in class. “I think starting speech and debate would be so beneficial for the school,” she said. “A lot of classes have us doing presentations, class discussions, and actual debates. Having an opportunity to do that in our school, especially if you really like it, would make our school a better place.”
Other students see the idea as something that could bring HAHS more in line with opportunities offered at many high schools. Landon Poulios said he thinks the club would be “really cool because on media they always show a speech and debate team in high schools. Even if I am not on it, I think it’s something all high schools should have and needs to happen.”
While student interest is evident, the team is still in the early planning stages. An official advisor has not yet been chosen, though two possible candidates are currently considering the role. For now, the future of a speech and debate team will likely depend on student participation, staff support, and approval from school administration.
