This year the Hamburg Lion’s club and the Hamburg High School LEO’s club combined to work on a float for the King Frost Parade. For many years the Lion’s no longer participated in making a float due to a lack of help. The float they ended up designing for this year was neon-tropical-jungle-themed which was chosen by the LEO club.
Many students spent their free time helping after school to decorate the float at a garage in town. One of the students who put in a lot of work on the float was Kaylum Riegel, the treasurer of the LEO club. He worked mainly every day after school except for one or two days. Along with that he also took control of this event and got all of the information for the club. He felt that the best part of doing the float was walking in the parade as he got to dance and hand out candy. The biggest issues with the float for him were all of the issues that happened before the parade, during the nights of decorating the float, and also and how unorganized the some people were. Overall he had a good time helping with the float, but if he could change one thing for next year, it would be to start working on the float way sooner.
Another LEO club member who helped with the float was Bethany Stufflet, the club’s secretary. She did not help too much out of school as she was unable to, but she did help in school and during the parade. She painted the tiki boxes brown to display on the float and helped during a couple of flex days. Besides that, she walked in the parade, handed out candy, and danced. The biggest issue with the float for her was the public anxiety that came with it as she did not like everybody’s eyes all over her while she walked in the float, but she did enjoy giving kids candy throughout the parade. Her only piece of advice for next year would be to be more organized during certain times and to get more students involved in walking in the parade.
Overall the float ended up turning out pretty good with all of the help from students involved in LEO club and from Lion club members. LEO club hopes to do it again next year, but make it even better.
