Ultrakill is a fast paced first person shooter that takes place in a unique take on Dante’s Inferno, with a small hint of sentience and sadism. The game is not for younger audiences, as it is rated 18+ on Steam. But for those of age, it can be a fun challenge and experience.
The music is one of the best part of the game, as it defines its own style. While a majority of the soundtrack is made by the game’s creator, Hakita under the alias Heaven Pierce Her, it features music by KEYGEN CHURCH, meganeko, HEALTH, and Vylet Pony. All the songs follow a similar instrumental style, usually with sampled amen break drums accompanying heavy guitars, organs, strings, and sometimes even harpsicords and piano.
The graphics are fully customizable, allowing the player to play the game through the normal graphics or even through Playstation 1 graphics. The Playstation 1, or PSX, graphics force the game to “low-poly mode” which decreases the amount of shapes the computer has to count. The player can even turn on a custom palette, which takes the colors from an image file and forces every color on screen to abide by only those colors.
Storywise, there is a lot going on. But the main plot is in the motto of the game itself, “Mankind is dead. Blood is fuel. Hell is full.” The player is a robotic war machine named V1, a blood fueled machine created for the soul purpose of war. But, after mankind had full gone extinct, V1 had to find other means to get fuel. So, the player must traverse through Hell, killing as many hellish denizens as possible. At the end of each level, the player is graded based on style, kills, and time. If they player gets an S rank in each of these catagories, they will be rewarded a perfect rank, or P rank, for the level. It is a common challenge for players to attempt to P rank every level in the game. Each level also features a special challenge relating to the level itself. These challenges require the player to go out of their way to complete them.
