As January is brought around the “New year, New me” motto is thrown around like a frisbee. There is so much pressure about change and readjustment once the new year approaches. Rather than using January as a time for adjustment and exposure. Trying to make drastic changes without patience and focus may result in failure when everyone is focused on improving or drastically changing themselves. However this should be a time to relax, and reflect on another year filled with success and failure. Making such complex changes and forcing the idea that we need change. Normally peers are on the more depressed side once January approaches. Marilu Henner said, “Feeling a little blue in January is normal.” Some teens tend to feel more sad than joyful for another year. For some this could mean new changes but for others this could mean another dreadful year.
While we visit some students’ opinions, Cali Tobias says, “I’m so glad another year has come to an end, because now it feels like I can start all over again.” On the other hand, Chase Brodhead says, “Another year has come and I rather it start in summer. It doesn’t feel like much has changed because I’m still doing the same things.” So although January is about change and evening, how does HAHS do that when we come back into the same cycle? There are factors that could change that, like when students receive a schedule change. A change in schedule is a huge positive because this breaks a cycle teens look at to be “never ending.”
Although there are many outlooks on January, ultimately it should be used as a reset month. We should be patient, and pay attention to growth. M.L. Stedman said, “January looks forward to the new year and back to the old year. He sees the past and future”. Take time to process an eventful year, and reflect on all the accomplishments. Maybe even use this time to reflect on some failures that became a struggle. How can you do that better? How could you avoid that problem for the new year? What were your accomplishments in 2025? Use January as a steady growth period, and make the best of a calming month.
