Every generation has its signature pieces of media that are agreed upon as a staple of their time. Recently, nostalgic media has been on a rise globally. Many key fashion statements and television from the early 2000s have been gaining popularity recently. In fact, recently CDs have even outsold digital downloads, signifying that the new generation would rather throw out the new and take back the old. There may be a question lingering to many as to why nostalgic media would be on the rise and the answer is simple: comfort. Watching nostalgic media brings the viewer back to a simpler point in time.
There is also another explanation: trend cycles. Trends tend to repeat every 20 years or so, meaning plenty of recycled trends to go around. Freshman Lily Yoder says, “I think the rise of nostalgic media is a good thing and explores the things our parents used and so on.” When students get to see the nostalgic media that their parents’ generation experienced, they get to pass it along to their friends who can pass it along to their younger siblings, cousins and other friends. The rise of nostalgic media can come down to another thing: that the media never truly dies. It is passed down from generation to generation between friends and family alike.
