Delayna Grim – 9
An iconic decade with an even more iconic show, the 1990s brought nostalgia full force with “That ‘70s Show.” Directed by David Trainer, the main cast is Danny Masterson (Steven Hyde), Laura Prepon (Donna Pinciotti), Mila Kunis (Jackie Burkhart), Topher Grace (Eric Foreman), Wilmer Valderrama (Fez), and Ashton Kutcher (Michael Kelso). The show follows a group of teenagers in 1970s Wisconsin starting from May 1976 to December 31, 1979. The show features many references to 1970s teen culture with fashion, cable TV, VCRs, and even disco. However, on a more serious note, the show also addresses society at the time and the economic issues the United States had to deal with post Vietnam war. Many popular 70s bands are featured in the soundtrack too such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, and The Steve Miller Band.
It was one of the first times a sitcom had their focus purely on the teenagers as main characters. Previously sitcoms would have been focused on families or adults with the teenagers as supporting characters. This was different because the show revolved around the teenagers and different issues that teens were going through in their age bracket with their families being the supporting characters.
