The Hamburger Festival, organized by the Our Town Foundation, has taken place on the Saturday before Labor Day for the past 21 years from 10 in the morning until 6 in the evening right in the town of Hamburg. For many local families, it has become a tradition to attend, but the Hamburger Festival has attracted people from all over the East Coast. Every year one stand will win the Best Burger Award, and this year the judges voted for Copperz. The featured burger at this stand was an Oktoberfest Burger, which was a LaFaver beef patty that was topped with Swiss cheese, apple caraway sauerkraut, beer mustard, and black forest ham on a pretzel bun.
Summer Bonser, a senior at HAHS, has been attending the Hamburger Festival ever since she can remember. Unfortunately, she could not go this year due to a knee injury but still has a lot to share about past experiences. She always went with her mom and dad, but in the past few years, she has walked around with friends and met up with her parents later. Her favorite burger, the Luther, is sold at Deitsch Eck’s stand. This burger is pretty ordinary, but instead of a normal bun, it has a glazed donut holding the patty in place. Summer’s favorite part of the festival is walking around with her friends and seeing all of the different burgers.
Another senior at HAHS, Erica Gerner, also goes to the Hamburger Festival every year. This year, she came down with her mom and walked around with me. Erica says that this is one of her favorite events, and it is so neat to see all of the different burgers that people come up with. She also thinks it is really cool how far people will travel to Hamburg for the Hamburger Festival. At this year’s festival, Erica got the Luther burger and a pickle on a stick, which she gets every year. The Hamburger Festival is really fun for people to get out and do something fun for the day. It is a great thing to do with friends which is what Erica mostly does.
