Al Diegel – 12
Deltarune is a role-playing game created and developed by Toby Fox, the same man behind the 2015 JRPG, Undertale. Deltarune, while only half complete, has made a huge influence on the internet and other small indie developers all over the world. With its humor and often serious story, it has made a hit the high school age demographic.
While I was not able to get into Deltarune when the first chapter released, I was able to play it once the second chapter released. And I must say, it changed the way I think about stories in video games. The game sets itself apart from most other games by constantly reminding the player that they are a separate entity from the character they control. Kris is the silent protagonist of Deltarune, the only human in Hometown, a town of monsters. The player controls Kris through many strange pocket worlds that pop up around Hometown behind various doors. But at the end of nearly every chapter, Kris rips out their soul, effectively ripping the player’s control over them.
Anyone can play the first two chapters for free on Steam, Playstation, and Xbox. Currently, the full game goes for around $25, and is expected to increase as more chapters release.
