As the years go on and students get older, and grade level increases, silly traditions in class for St. Patrick’s Day have slipped away, leaving no activities for the luck-filled holiday.
Everyone knows the tradition of wearing green for St. Patrick’s Day, or getting pinched. As students grow older, less green is in the hallways. Some students do keep the spirit up, but much less than before. Freshman Lily Borkey’s favorite memory is, “My parents used to make me wake up early and dye a glass of milk green and tell my little sister it was a leprechaun.”
In younger years, students would come into their classrooms from other things like lunch or recess and find that the leprechaun had destroyed their rooms. Freshman Noah Clancy noted that his favorite part was finding the footprints on the walls, and he wishes we still had that today.
Students are at a split when it comes to having traditions come back today. Freshman Phalene Hoppes stated, “I think it’s good that we do spirit days for it, but valuable class time should not be taken away or shortened.” While others noted that they wished the school did activities or more decorations, as it is boring without them.
Another notable tradition around this time would be McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes. Most students who have had it have rated it highly, like freshman Aubrey Maurer, who gave it an 8 out of 10. Others have either not had it or are not a huge mint fan.
Overall, students have enjoyed their childhood traditions, and some wish we had more today in school.
