As the end of the current academic year approaches, it is time for students to begin planning for the following year. One of the most important steps in this process is filling out the course request form. This form allows students to select the classes they would like to take in the next school year, helping them shape their academic experience. One student, Regina Morales, says that one class that interested her this year was drawing. She picked this course because all different types of art interest her. She has chosen to retake choir this year, one of her favorite classes. Regina thinks that the process of picking the classes is very easy and reliable, but she also thinks the courses should change from year to year. She thinks that students should have a say in the different courses that are offered here at the Hamburg Area High School. She also thinks that the different available courses should be advertised in a different way.
Mrs. Machamer is a guidance counselor here at the high school, this is who ran the course recommendations this year. Mrs. Machamer saw an increase in interest for the social studies electives. She says that her favorite part about sharing the course is getting to be actively in front and speaking to a big group of students like teachers get to all day. She also states that she would overall like more time in front of the students to get more in depth about the topics instead of just having one class period to fit them in. The most challenging part of this task for Mrs. Machamer is helping everyone make that final decision. She says “I am talking to teenagers after all.” Her overall goal was to get students thinking about their future and how their current classes can impact their decisions into a particular field and to get them closer to finding a path that is appropriate or interesting for them.
Having this course request form is a great way for students to impact their own school life by being around the things they love. Whether they choose more music courses, art courses, or history, they all make an amazing impact on the Hamburg Area High School’s student body. With authorities like Mrs. Machamer helping out and setting those goals out to help students, it overall makes a positive impact on the well being of our school.
