While walking in the hallways or relaxing in class, students can easily overhear phrases being repeated in classrooms. At first, they can be funny or entertaining, but very quickly, they turn annoying. These phrases walk a very fine line between funny and just not funny anymore because they are overheard so much. Typically, whatever is viral or a trending TikTok audio is what sparks these phrases and turns them into inside jokes between teens.
Freshman Kylie Werley explained, “Random slang words such as ‘67’ and stuff like that. I do not know why people say it, but it is kinda strange.” The slang phrase “67” is a highly overused one, mainly in math class, since it is considered “cool” and “funny.” Yet after a while, when students are trying to learn, and somebody randomly shouts out that the answer is six-seven, it gets annoying, making the phrase one that is constantly overheard.
As stated earlier, Lilian Borkey shared, “Whatever TikTok sound is trending at the time, but if it is something teachers say, it would be ‘lock in.’” It is not just students who overuse phrases. Sometimes teachers constantly repeat the same slang over and over, which can become tiresome and definitely take the fun out of it.
My opinion on this matter is the phrase Ohio and then whatever students add afterwards. I never understood why a state was funny. Maybe I missed something online, or I was not chronically online for that phrase when it blew up. But I think it is extremely overused at this point, and it was never even funny when it was super popular, let alone now.
