New Years Eve is a tradition loved by many, and with New Years Eve approaching fast, students at Hamburg Area High School have come forward to share how they celebrate the New Years with their family at home.
Freshman Delayna Grim celebrates the New Years with her mom making pork and sauerkraut, which is a German tradition brought to America by German immigrants. Delayna enjoys the concept of New Years Eve and how it gets people feeling optimistic about the following year. Delayna enjoys how we have off of school for New Years day, and does not have anything she hates about the day specifically. Her New Year’s resolution is to take up sewing as a hobby, and learn how to sew 1960s mod dresses, which are dresses defined by short hemlines, clean lines, and vibrant and graphic patterns. Delayna hopes that during 2026, 1960s fashion gets back into style.
Freshman George Sneddon does not have a specific tradition for New Years Eve. George thinks that the idea of New Years Eve being a refresh for everyone is amazing. George enjoys the celebration and how it is the start of becoming a better person, but does not enjoy the ball drop, as he thinks that it is overrated. His New Year’s resolution is to keep his room cleaner and to have a better work space.
Mrs. Bucheit celebrates the New Years the same way that Freshman Delayna does, by making pork and sauerkraut. Mrs. Bucheit sees New Year’s Eve as a day to sit down, enjoy family time, have a meal together and watch football. Mrs. Bucheit said that she personally does not watch football though, her husband prefers to watch it instead. Mrs. Bucheit enjoys spending time with her family on New Years Eve, but does not like how the months of January and February afterwards feel so sluggish as if they keep dragging on. Mrs. Bucheit’s New Year’s resolution is to try and exercise more and lose some weight.
Mrs. McCarthy also does not do anything specific for New Years traditions, besides watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, which is America’s longest running and most often watched New Year’s Eve TV special, with this year being the special’s 54th year anniversary. Mrs. McCarthy actually does not enjoy the New Years as much, seeing that every day can be considered a new beginning. She sees the New Years as an excuse to push attempts to do better back until January. Like Freshman Delayna Grim, Mrs. McCarthy enjoys how we have off of school for the New Years, but, like mentioned before, does not like how the date somewhat serves as an excuse to push things back until then. Mrs. McCarthy’s New Year Resolution is to try and do more daily walks with her dogs, even if it is super cold out or raining.
As demonstrated, New Year’s Eve celebrations can be so diverse between families, and yet so similar. New Year’s Eve, while not appealing to some, helps serve a purpose as a lead into not only the new year, but a potential new start for others to improve and make the following year better than the last.
