The year is 1910 and kids for Christmas are all wanting one thing: a teddy bear. This is something that is very different from today as a lot of kids are asking Santa for other things like electronics and dolls that talk. Over the last 120 years, kids have been asking for many different things at the most wonderful time of the year. In 1920 the hottest toy was a YoYo! The same toy that had a resurgence in popularity in the 1990’s. The 1930’s brought something different to the table with most kids wanting a Shirley Temple doll. The doll was priced at just $3 to $5 in stark contrast to the dolls sometimes ranging in price from $30 to $40. Fast forward 40 years to the 1970’s when Star Wars took over movie theaters and televisions everywhere, kids only wanted one thing for Christmas: figurines that looked like their favorite characters.
This is a trend that has stood the test of time and made it into other things throughout the years. We now see the likes of video game characters in our aisles at Walmart to be paired with the Star Wars figurines that are still in stores to this day! The 1980’s saw a surge in dolls: Cabbage Patch Dolls! The price of a Cabbage Patch Doll was just $25 at full retail price.
In 1990, the biggest toys of Christmas were Tickle Me Elmo and Beanie Babies. Finally in the 2000’s, electronics became a big Christmas item with the likes of the Wii, Xbox, and Playstation being sought after items for a child to open on Christmas morning. These days kids ask for iPads and gift cards for their games that they love. Dolls and figurines are still things that are asked for as well. The trends changed so much over the years but one thing has remained the same: kids always have something good to open on Christmas Morning!
