In southeastern Pennsylvania, one of the most common ancestors are the Pennsylvania Dutch. Pennsylvania Dutchland is a region of German Pennsylvanians. Within this community many Christmas traditions remain to this day. One of the funnier traditions is hiding the Christmas pickle in the tree. Some families make pickle themed treats for Christmas too.
Another tradition is the Bellsnickel, a popular character in German folklore who is sometimes associated with Saint Nicholas. When he comes to visit kids, he holds a switch made of brushes for the bad kids. For the nice kids, it is said he brings candy.
Another tradition is a second Christmas. Many Pennsylvania Dutch and local Amish celebrate a second Christmas with their families the day after Christmas. Like just about any other Christmas culture around the world, gift giving is one of the most common traditions. These traditions remain an important part of the holidays for many families here in Pennsylvania.
