Winter can be really difficult for some students. As temperatures drop, people start to notice changes in their peers and their mood, work ethic, and motivation. While bringing bad things, winter also brings good things, like holidays and snow days, but that can make focusing hard for some. With just two and a half weeks of school in December and students looking forward to winter break, students can get really unfocused. Several classmates have experienced changes in their mood and work ethic during this time and are affected by it.
Freshman Gunner Hornig says he can notice his mood changing, and he feels happier as he likes the cold. Sometimes his work ethic is affected, as it is cold, and he cannot focus because of this. He can see a change in peers’ behavior as people tend to get more agitated easily. Nothing about winter is hard for him because it is one of his favorite seasons.
Freshman Ricky Favere notices his mood changing in winter because he is usually really happy or really mad. Cold weather affects his work ethic because the cold weather makes him stay inside, as it is obviously cold out, and when he does, he usually ends up getting bored and doing his school work then. He notices a change in his peers’ behavior as some are mad because of the weather, and some are happy because of it. The part of winter that is hardest for him is the end because he waits for it to get warmer.
Understanding that these changes happen can benefit everyone. Teachers have to face all of this, too, not just students. Either way, from mood swings to motivational changes, the coldest months of the year can be difficult for everyone and affect how they function.
