Hamburg Area High School students involved in student council have done an amazing job with organizing and giving back to their community. Over the past months of school they have hosted a thrilling winter dance, organized an excited winter pep rally, kept the spirit days joyful, and so much more.
One of the major give backs to the community for STUCO is the volunteering and giving a hand to both Tilden and Perry Elementary schools. Perry Elementary hosts their annual Santa’s Workshop for their students, on December 12th, to feel a part of the Christmas rush. This is where not only can these children get some treats and drinks, play fun games, but also shop for their loved ones.
Perry organizes the gymnasium into exactly what the name sounds like, “Santa’s Workshop” comes to life. The gym is flooded with gifts for family and friends. Each table is categorized by family members. From grandmother, to sister, to grandfather, from uncle, to friends, Perry has it all.
Children are sent home with an envelope for their parents to give them a limit to spend, and then send the money back. This is where fellow STUCO members take part. They will walk through this workshop with the children, making sure they stay within their budget. Not only does this help the children with math skills, but also money management. There is an app that members can download that is basically a calculator, designed in a cash register setting.
In the end kids will come to the check out, and handle the money transfer themselves. They also have the opportunity to get it bagged, or wrapped. Santa’s Workshop is such a joyful, and enthusiastic event that children cannot get enough of.
