Christmas time is already around the corner, and soon the warm ham and stuffing will find its place on many dining room tables. But not every student eats ham and stuffing for Christmas dinner. Some may have turkey or chicken, with sides of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut.
Hamburg Area High School is home to many different Christmas traditions, with many of those traditions include sitting together as a family and eating Christmas dinner. Most families have traditional Christmas foods like ham, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, an assortment of vegetables, and baked goods. But, some other families have chicken, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, mac and cheese, soups, and bread rolls with crackers and cheese. “My mom was arguing with my grandmother and they burnt the croissant.” Bethany Stuffet shares, “They were arguing because there’s not enough room in the kitchen, and they were both doing different things at the same time.”
Another common tradition in Hamburg homes over the holiday seems to be watching movies while eating Christmas dinner together, such as: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Grinch, and A Christmas Carol. This tradition is present in most cultures outside of America.
And just like this tradition, the Christmas foods in most European countries are much the same: ham or chicken with a siding of either potatoes or sauerkraut.
