Many students at HAHS appreciate the era in which they grew up. However, some students at HAHS embrace older eras, even if they did not live through them. While the times and norms have changed, the past continues to influence their life.
Senior Logan Rickenbach appreciates the culture spanning from 1985 to 1999. His favorite aspects of the era were the style and spirit that defined popular culture. In particular, he finds that the clothes of the early 90s were “immersive,” with articles like jersey jackets, ripped jeans, baggy shirts, and beanies. His clothing reflects the 90s, as he is known to wear items typically worn in the era, such as puffer jackets.
Logan also listens to music from the era to study its culture and style. He notes that one of the defining characteristics of ’90s songs is vinyl scratches. Moreover, he admires one of his favorite artists from that era, NAS, whom he considers an influential rapper whose originality is expressed through his debut album, Illmatic. Released in 1994, the album has received critical acclaim and has since been ranked 44th on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums.
Another aspect of the ’90s that Logan enjoys is BMX riding. The activity rose in popularity throughout the era and was defined by freestyle riding, with an emphasis on “tricks, flow, and creativity,” according to Polygon Bikes. Logan enjoys riding his BMX bike and often posts videos of himself performing tricks on it. In addition, he owns a ‘90s mountain bike and a bike frame, though he never uses the frame because it is too heavy. Overall, Logan is respectful of the fashion, style, and activities of a past era and has worked to keep it alive.
