As it gets closer and closer to Halloween, the debate about candy corn becomes louder and louder. Some people enjoy it, while others cannot stand the sight of the colorful candy.
Candy corn was created in the 1880s by George Renninger but first sold by Goelitz Candy Company even though he was employed elsewhere. Most candies in the 1800s were made to look like farm foods and given to children who lived in small towns or farms, and now it is a Halloween staple that people buy year-round.
Andrew Koval, a Hamburg Area High School senior, likes candy corn. He thinks that the texture is nice and it tastes “sweet enough without tasting too bitter.” He also mentions that he eats it a lot during October, and that it is something that is a must-have during the Halloween season.
Raynee Dunleavy, a senior at Hamburg Area High School, is the total opposite. She does not like candy corn at all. She describes it as having a similar texture to fondant, which she really does not like. She also thinks that it is too sweet and contains too much sugar. She does not understand why people enjoy it, saying that “there are so many better candies.”
Although there is a large divide on whether or not candy corn is good or bad, it is still a tradition that many people participate in every Halloween.
