Kaylea Detweiler – 11
Hamburg Area High school offers many different forms of art programs. Not only does that entail drawing and painting, and ceramics. Hamburg offers different forms of art like video communications or even journalism.
Publications offer countless possibilities and activities, including creativity tests, newspaper articles, yearbook editing and so much more. This year we have just finished our 248 page yearbook.
New apps like InDesign are introduced, which are used very frequently, also SNO will be used to upload completed, published, articles. This is like a digital footprint for all our students’ articles where they have their own portfolio. This exposes students to a type of publication of their writing, and some may receive feedback on SNO. InDesign is a graphic design program that projects PhotoShopping, organizational and preparation skills, and uses higher technology. With such high technology, it is hard to know and learn everything. Mrs. McCarthy says, “ Even if I learn some stuff from the students, we teach each other.”
When Mrs. McCarthy says what she thinks students like best, she says, “they like the chairs and the independent nature of the library.” The variety of seating and freedom in the library makes students comfortable, and productive. She also says, “They love the calendar, they develop a sense of self-pasting and makes it easy to be aware.” In the beginning of the year, there will be numerous meetings at the round table: for introduction and direction. But also will be given a publications handbook and calendar. The handbook will also be published on the shared Google drive, and directed with links, instructions, and checklist. The calendar is laid out, not only to use as a calendar, but each individual day has the assignment due. This gives students freedom to go ahead, and paste themselves accordingly.
This year publication classes are growing and an even stronger community. Fellow juniors, Kaylea Detweiler and Analia Perez love their time in publications. They take their first period everyday and make so many new friends in the process. Kaylea says, “I’ve taken this class for 3 years, and I’m reaching for a fourth.” Analie says, “I came back from elementary school from Jersey, so I was kind of nervous. But publication is so manageable and organized once I got the hang of it, it was way easier.” Not only do Juniors love this type of procedure, lowerclassmen love it even more. Freshmen, Reiley Jozefick says, “I love having publications because it is a great time starting my morning with my friends, and not having lectures everyday.” These girls greatly enjoy their time having publications during their first period, and wouldn’t trade it for any other class.
Overall publications are an amazing class to provide and guide us with so many different skills and lessons. It is definitely worth taking for the 2026-2027 school year. Do not waste any time!
