When the last bell rings, many students rush home to relax, do chores, or do homework. This might be true for some, yet many other students have activities that occur right after school, like school activities or work, that they have to as soon as the bell rings.
Delaney Muller, a senior at Hamburg Area High School, goes to the Journey Cafe after school three days a week to be a youth leader. Though it sounds busy, she describes it as “chill, low-key, and fun.” In fact, she says it actually helps her academically because the Journey Cafe also gives her a place to study and complete homework. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, Delaney finds that the balance works well for her.
Riney Mohn, another senior, has a schedule that looks much different. In the past, she participated in the musical. She now participates in jazz band, kettle choir, small group for the drama showcase, treble choir, marching band, and percussion ensemble. Most weeks she practices two days per week, although at one point she was involved four days each week. Even though she says she often feels overwhelmed and sometimes lacks personal time, she reminds herself that these activities are her hobbies, which helps her manage the stress.
