At HAHS, gaming is a popular leisure activity for students. Below the surface, however, video games are immersive experiences created by groups of skilled individuals. As such, the process that creates them should not be overlooked. Every game has a multifaceted development, and students can participate in it through the school’s game design course.
Students interested in game development can join the Video Game Design class run by Mr. King. The course lasts one semester and provides a general overview of the game-making process. According to the HAHS Curriculum, it begins by studying game design philosophies to better understand their reasoning. Students then use their knowledge to design and build upon game mechanics. Later, they transition to simple programming and group work to realize the principles behind game creation. Those who leave his class have knowledge and practical experience that can help them better appreciate game creation and consider a career in the gaming industry.
Mr. King’s course on game design gives students the tools needed to succeed in game creation. HAHS senior Al Diegel is interested in game development and has graduated from one of Mr. King’s game design classes. He initially joined the class to learn about the elements that comprise games. It taught him that “there have to be consequences or obstacles for the player, there must be a goal.” He now has his own game studio and “[does] 90% of the work,” making music, scripts, art, and code, among other things. Now he is working toward becoming a popular independent game developer. Overall, Al Diegel still uses what he learned in the game design class to expand his knowledge and skills beyond the course’s reach.
