Life science is a branch of science that explores living organisms and the systems that support life from the tiniest cells to entire ecosystems. It helps people understand how plants grow, animals adapt, the human body works, and how all living things interact with each other and their environment. By studying life science, students gain knowledge of the processes that keep life going and learning about things critical to the environment around them. As a freshman, these topics can be a struggle for some, and for others, they may be really easy.
Mrs. Bucheit explains that the goal of the class is to teach students the general concepts of the Keystone they are obligated to take. The class is also required to take for graduation. She says, “It is important to understand how our bodies work, how to maintain them, and also the ecosystems around.” Mrs. Bucheit’s favorite chapter to teach in life science is genetics. She says this is her favorite because it is very interesting to have the ability to understand the different changing traits and see how genetic disorders occur. She states, “Students should be interested in life science because it’s awesome, our bodies are amazing, and seeing how things take place is as well.” After many years of teaching this subject, Mrs. Bucheit believes freshmen seem to like the chapter on evolution the best, and it is the one they most succeed in. On the other hand, the chemistry of life is one chapter that they seem to dislike and also struggle with.
Noelle Bowen, a freshman in Biology, says, “I consider the class more on the difficult side, and I tend to struggle a little bit, but overall it is not the hardest.” She says she has learned complex things, like details of cells and the process of evolution. When looking back on work, Noelle says, “The work is manageable and definitely not an overload.” She likes how the work can be put into real-world knowledge, and is important and useful to know. Another thing she likes about the class is how there are many opportunities for group work as well as socializing. This is a very big help to Noelle when learning and understanding a lot of information. Overall, Noelle really enjoys Biology class and thinks it is not too much to handle as a freshman.
Another freshman, Steven Haines, says Biology class is not too difficult, but it can be sometimes. He says, “It is difficult to drastically raise your grade in the class, but easy to keep a consistent high grade.” One thing he likes about this class is the labs and how they put together fun activities to teach students an overall lesson. Stevie’s first impression of Biology class was that it was fun since the class is heavily based on labs, and he finds these labs to be interesting and exciting. Overall, Stevie would say this class is very interesting, informative, and not too much to handle as a freshman.
