On Wednesday, October 22, students at Hamburg Area High School took the digital Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. The ASVAB test is typically taken once a year at some point during October, but as of now, there is no information available about another test occurring this year. If any seniors had plans to take it, but could not or failed, those seniors will have to talk to their recruiters and get a test arranged with them instead.
Depending on the field, students need to be in a different percentile to qualify. Though, to pass overall, students must be in at least in the 31st percentile. For specifics, Army is 31st, Navy is 35th, Air Force is 36th, and Coast Guard is 40th. If a person fails the ASVAB test, he/she must take it again to have something for proof to get in Act 158, or if you would like to join the military in general.
The ASVAB test measures the person’s overall skills and interests, like their language, math, and practical skills. This test is also commonly used for anyone who plans on joining the military, so it is required for anyone planning on doing something in the military field. Recently, students have been taking the ASVAB test to find their skillsets and where their talent lies, even if the test taker does not plan on joining the military. After the test, students are also offered a career exploration and a career interest piece, so students can see where their strong suits lie. As an additional bonus, test takers also see from their results what careers may be of interest to them. Finally, some students also use this test as evidence to get involved with Act 158, which is a Pennsylvania law that allows high school students another form of graduation.
The ASVAB test is a good way to see where the test takers’ strengths lie with jobs and future careers. The test is free and takes around one to two hours. For more information on the ASVAB test, visit www.military.com/join-armed-forces/asvab.
