The Faraday Lecture was hosted on October 1, 2025 by Mr. Laughlin. The general goals of said lectures are to simply teach people about the branches of science not commonly taught in the school system. During the Faraday Lecture, Jack Hilt from the American Modeling Association showed up to Hamburg Area High School, and gave a demonstration on radio-controlled aircrafts to the people showing up to the lecture, being 15 different people. Jack Hilt also talked about piloting in general, being a part of the club for the Faraday Lectures, and had an event at the Blue Mountain Academy Airport.
Some of the older Faraday Lectures include Deborah Bloom talking about The Poison Squad, Luiz Meza and how he worked on the James Webb Hubble Telescope, Joe Parent who talked about building trucks, Ramy Ammar and Sarkis Mazmanian and the gut micro-biome brain alliance, and how even Mr. Laughlin paired with Mr. Kline and talked about the atomic bomb.
The reason why the Faraday Lectures are called what they are is because it is based on Michael Faraday, who, in Mr. Laughlin’s words, was “the 1800’s Bill Nye.” Michael started working in a book store, but took many notes on science. They were so good that at the college local to the library, a scientist asked Faraday to post his notes to the public. Eventually, Faraday ended up getting a job under Humphry Davy, who discovered elements like potassium and sodium. Faraday ended up working all the grunt work, but also got to introduce people to the lecture room. But, when Faraday introduced one speaker to the room, he got so intimidated by its size, that he ran out. Faraday ended up hosting the lecture on his own, and people adored it. People liked it so much in fact he got requested to open it to the public and host his own lectures. When it was opened to the public, it got very popular, and soon, the Faraday Lectures were born and how they are today at Hamburg Area High School.
