Show Review: The Watcher

Morgan Lutz

The Watcher, Netflix original series, based on the true story of Derek and Maria Broaddus, premiered on October 13, 2022. The original case of the watcher was published in New York Magazine in November 2018. The show is based on this story with a few added paranormal elements.

The Netflix show was written and directed by Ryan Murphy. The main characters are played by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale. The show also stars the American actress Jennifer Coolidge.

The show follows the couple and their children after they move into the Watcher’s house. Viewers get to see how the family’s life changes as they start to receive letters, meet weird neighbors, and make new friends in the town. The couple even goes as far as hiring a private detective to try and understand who is writing notes and threatening their happy life.

The show allows viewers to understand the story of The Watcher but also leaves them wanting to know more. There are many plot twists throughout the story line that leave viewers on the edge of their seats, ready to finish the show and get to the ending. The ending of the show is strategically written to make viewers want to research the actual story of The Watcher and the couple living in his house.

However, there are a few negative things about the show. While watching, it feels like there are many plot holes. Viewers will ask questions about simple scenes, and it feels as though the small details were simply forgotten about. Viewers also do not have much time to connect with the characters and get a true understanding of who they are. However, this could also be intentional to leave viewers with a sense of mystery throughout the show.

Overall, I would recommend this show to anyone who enjoys watching something with a slight horror element. On 7 November 2022 Netflix confirmed that there will be a season two of The Watcher coming soon. It is available on Netflix and rated TV-MA.
