Dogs have proven to be good for the soul and human mental health. Dogs have been proven to help with anxiety, depression and the disabled. While dogs are able to understand many of the words we use, they are even better at interpreting our tone of voice, body language, and gestures. And like any good human friend, a loyal dog will look into their owner’s eyes to gauge their emotional state and try to understand what they are thinking and feeling.

Dogs do not just help with mental health but also physical health. The American Heart Association has linked the ownership of pets, especially dogs, with a reduced risk for heart disease and greater longevity. Dogs have to be active to keep themselves healthy, so in the progress, it has shown the significance of having a dog that motivates people to stay active and healthy.

Other than having a dog has a pet, dogs all over the world are employed! Service dogs are involved in programs like The Seeing Eye, which assist the visually impaired. At Hamburg Area High School a new dog on campus is giving a new name to what it means to serve. Spike, a golden retriever lab mix is putting on his working vest to train to guide the blind. On this extensive journey, the pup will go on to learn discipline and how to become a set of eyes for his owner.
