Studying abroad in college

Jasmin Modricker, Writer

College students of undergraduate and graduate programs have the opportunity to study their major or experience their major in a different country. It will differ based on what college the student may attend, but the majority of colleges offer this program. Studying abroad is coincided with the major or minor that student is learning about and will be able to experience learning first hand in a new country.

Studying abroad comes with many options such as the time period the student can go overseas and to what country. It could be for a few weeks, a semester, or even over summer/winter/spring break. For the majority of college students who decide to study abroad, they travel in their junior year for either or a semester or an entire year to get a full experience. Colleges have programs in many countries. Usually the countries are either in North or South America, Europe, Asia, or even Africa. Some popular countries to study abroad are in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, or China. It costs an average of around $30,000 to study abroad per semester.

Studying abroad benefits the student to live in a different culture to experience firsthand and study their major outside of school in a new area with new people. Most countries students will visit are not fluent in English, so they are forced to learn a new language and eventually become fluent in it while they are living in the different country. While studying abroad, it is essential to understand the language of the country the student will be living in to get the full benefit of their time abroad.

Although studying abroad is not a perfect fit for every student in college, students may realize that the time in a different country does not work with their other academic goals or extracurricular plans. It is a very popular option for the students who are looking forward to new experiences and can fit it into their college life.  Studying abroad allows for a new view on a student’s major and can make their college experience ten times better than it originally was.
