Birdbox, directed by Susanne Bier is a thriller/horror movie about an invisible force that causes people to die by killing themselves. Birdbox was released in 2018 and is available to watch on Netflix. The movie starts by showing a few days before the “end of the world.” It shows the world as we see it today, with normal people doing normal things. The main character, Malorie (played by Sandra Bullock), is pregnant and going to a doctor’s appointment to get a checkup on her baby that is soon to come. She goes to the doctor’s appointment with her sister Jessica (played Sarah Paulson). As they are on the drive home and discussing the mass suicides that are being committed in other parts of the world, it becomes clear that the phenomenon has moved to where they are currently as mass amounts of people hurl themselves off buildings, dive into oncoming traffic, and extreme chaos overcomes the country in seconds. Malorie’s sister is one of these people who passes away.

This first part of the movie is executed well and engages the viewer in the fear, chaos, and adrenaline that is coursing through each scene. In order to escape whatever is causing this, a group of people ends up taking refuge in a house together, including another pregnant woman. As they are talking about their own personal stories and what is happening outside, everyone pieces together that if someone looks at this invisible “creature,” they are essentially possessed to take their own life. As time passes and the survivors try to stay together, the film flashes forward to five years after the “world ended.” Mallorie and two children are the only survivors. Malorie names the children boy and girl, and both are the children of Malorie herself and the other pregnant woman who took shelter in the house. Years later, Malorie and the children hear of a place that can keep them safe; the only problem is crossing a river with strong rapids and frigid waters while blindfolded. The rest of the movie follows their journey to safety while they experience the invisible creatures, people who try to convince them to take their blindfolds off, and many other dangerous things they experience on the way. This movie will keep viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end. The Birdbox is a must-watch for any movie night!
