In most of high school, a student must take four core subjects: English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. The exact Math, English, Social Studies, or Science class depends on their grade, academic skill, and what they are interested in.

Hamburg Area High School students are very fortunate that this school offers so many options for these core subjects. HAHS also grants honors and AP classes available for more academic students, but also PS and regular levels classes are also provided.

35 HAHS students from all four grades were asked about their favorite and least favorite core class. The most votes for their favorite subject went to English, and the most for least favorite subject went to Math.

Here are some things about the English class; a quote from myself relating to this topic, “I think it’s because English gives students more creative liberty than any other core class. It’s more independent and you can write/read whatever you’re interested in.” Let us look at some facts about the effect of having an English class; first of all, it is required for graduation to reach full credit. English Language Arts is crucial for students after high school if they are wanting to earn a higher education. Learning grammatical and vocabulary skills is highly important in the other three subjects, so English affects them all.

Now onto the least favorite of the four cores; Math. Paige Cassler says, “The other subjects have much more depth and interesting things to get into, Math is just numbers that you set up in a different way and solve; it’s just not as interesting.” Though it is the average least-liked core subject, it also holds great importance for students.

Overall, each core subject has its boring and interesting topics, but they are all significant to a good quality of life and learning.
