Students discuss gas vs. electric cars

As students start driving within the high school, it is particularly important to make sure students choose the right car. As newer generations start driving, drivers often look for something easy to operate, reliable, and affordable. But, now electric cars are increasingly becoming popular which may mean more students choose an electric car.

Starting off, looking at efficiency, researchers say that electric cars are also more efficient than gas-powered vehicles. But, gas powered cars are more efficient than having to continuously charge up the car. An electric car can drive up to 250 miles on a full battery while a gas car’s mileage can range anywhere from 200 to 400 miles per full tank. While electric cars are a bit more expensive, in the long run, researchers say that with the gas prices skyrocketing at yearly all-time highs, an electric car would be a sufficient investment for saving more money. Electric cars are also proven to be way more environmentally friendly. Without emitting so much pollution, electric cars are the more “green” option if students are looking for an environmentally healthy car.

Sophomore Grace Cromyak says, “I’m already looking at the type of car I want, and it’s a gas car. I personally find them easier to use. Even though gas is expensive right now, I think charging up the car every so often would take up too much time.”

Sophomore Madison Redding says, “It honestly depends for me. Since gas prices are really high, I think an electric car would be nice, but I’ve never experienced one. I wouldn’t really know how it works because It’s newer. Since I’m going to be driving soon, I think as a first time driver I’m going to buy a gas car, just because I have more of an experience with them. But later on for a second car I may consider electric.”

Now, onto which type of car is the safest. Studies show the probability of getting injured in crashes involving EVs is lower for passengers than in vehicles fueled by gasoline and diesel. So, if students are looking for a safe and sturdy option, electric cars would be the best choice.
