Celebrating Christmas traditions

Alicia Gilbert

Arguably one of the most famous holidays, Christmas is celebrated all around the world. Many people celebrate it, but not many know the background of the holiday. Christmas was first celebrated in Rome on December 25, AD 336. It did not become a major festival until the 9th century. Many people remember this day as the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

Christmas is a holiday people can look forward to. It is the perfect way to celebrate the end of the year. Spending time with family and friends is amazing and of course getting gifts is always exciting. Different families celebrate this holiday in all types of ways. Some traditions are leaving milk and cookies out for Santa, kissing under the mistletoe, wearing an ugly sweater, and putting the star on top of the tree. People have certain traditions to make the holiday feel more special and more exciting for the family.

Not only do families have traditions, but some countries as a whole also have traditions. In Norway, people hide brooms around the house on Christmas eve because they believe Christmas eve coincides with witches and evil spirits. In Poland they only open Christmas gifts and sing carols after dinner. In Colombia they decorate roads and parks and put candles everywhere because they are lighting a path for Mary, the mother of Jesus, so come bless their homes. It is shocking to see how different countries have their own spin on the popular holiday.
