Saying bye to Paul

On October 17, 2022 Hamburg Area High School is sadly saying goodbye to their Seeing Eye trainee Paul.

When the dogs turn one they are then brought back to the Seeing Eye. Since this can be a very emotional process Mrs. McCarthy likes to say “Good luck in college” instead of saying goodbye.

Mrs. McCarthy has been working at Hamburg for 27 years. In 2016, she started as a volunteer puppy raiser and has gotten the chance to work with four dogs from the Seeing Eye: Wolfgang, Spike, Seely, And Paul. She has had Paul since November 10th, 2021. Paul is a very happy and friendly dog. A funny memory Mrs. McCarthy has about Paul is when he will steal some of her slippers when she is putting clothes away at home. She will also miss Paul’s little funny antics, the bounce in his walk, and his full body walk.

The Seeing Eye is a philanthropic organization that trains and breeds dogs to guide blind people. The dogs start training when they are about 8 weeks old and then stay with their voluntary owners until they turn one year old. The Seeing Eye is located in Morristown, New Jersey. All of the Seeing Eye dogs work for approximately 7-8 years with their owner. Every student is asked to pay $150 for the first visit, $50 for the following visits, and $1 to anybody who has served in the armed forces.
