Hamburg Area High School has brought countless musicals to life over the years, ranging from modern hits to timeless classics. This year, our talented student body is performing Mary Poppins, a beloved production that originally began as a book series and first appeared on stage in 1964. Decades later, Mary Poppins remains a celebrated staple in the world of musical theatre. The most recent Broadway run of Mary Poppins took place from 2006 to 2013. While there are currently no official announcements about a Broadway revival, recent surveys have gauged audience interest, suggesting that a return could be on the horizon.
Last year, HAHS staged The Wizard of Oz, which was a resounding success with audiences of all ages. The production featured multiple performances, each more impressive than the last. The classic story first aired on television on November 3, 1956, on CBS as part of the Ford Star Jubilee series, drawing an estimated 45 million viewers. It became such a cultural phenomenon that it was broadcast annually until 1991. The original Broadway debut of The Wizard of Oz occurred on January 20, 1903, at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for over 290 performances. More recently, the show returned to Broadway in 2024 with a revival at the Marquis Theatre. Both Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz have stood the test of time, continuing to enchant audiences generation after generation. With speculation of a Mary Poppins revival possibly coming in 2026, theater lovers everywhere can only hope to see her fly back onto the Broadway stage.
