The Hamburg Hawks took the field under the Friday night lights for their annual Homecoming football game on October 3 at the Hamburg Area High School football field. The stands were packed with students, parents, and community members, all eager to cheer on the Hawks during one of the most anticipated events of the school year.
Although the game did not end as the Hawks had hoped, the night was still filled with pride, determination, and memorable moments that showcased the team’s effort and unity. Senior player Astian Reppert shared that his favorite moment was “the first drive. We were able to drive right down the field and score, which felt great.” He also reflected on the team’s mindset after halftime, saying, “The team was definitely disappointed with the entire performance of the second half, but immediately looked forward to this week against Schuylkill Valley.”
For Astian, being a part of the Hamburg Hawks football team means more than just playing the game. “You gain a ton of support, but at the same time a lot of people don’t have anything good to say and instead criticize the team,” he said. “But the team as a whole is an opportunity to grow with friends and make many memories that will last a long time. Especially the coaches, they give plenty of football advice but also life advice that will help down the road.”
Sawyer Smith highlighted his motivation and the teamwork behind the Hawks’ spirit. “My dad motivates me the most when I’m on the field,” Sawyer said. He described the game in one word, “One/eleventh, as everyone needs to do their part for the team to succeed.” Smith’s favorite moment came when he made a big defensive play: “Getting a sack and forcing a fumble and turnover.”
Logan Warke entered the game determined to play his best despite an injury. “My main goal going into Friday’s game was to perform with a not fully healthy ankle and show up for not just my team but my family,” Logan said. He described the game as “wonder,” explaining, “I wonder how good of a team we could be if we worked and played like a team, not as individuals.” For Logan, being part of the Hawks program “means the world. I get to play with friends I’ve known for years and have such a well built organization around me.”
Even though the scoreboard did not reflect the Hawks’ hopes for a Homecoming win, the game displayed the team’s hard work, perseverance, and strong sense of community. The players’ dedication continue to represent the pride of Hamburg Area High School on and off the field.
