The Hamburg Lady Hawks varsity soccer team kicked off their fall season with positive energy, teamwork, and determination. Starting in late August, the girls have already shown that they are ready to compete, bringing school spirit and pride to Hamburg Area High School both on and off the field.
One of the season’s biggest highlights so far has been the team’s victory over Fleetwood, a win that brought excitement to players. Senior sweeper Kaylee Fornwalt described the moment as her favorite so far, “The highlight of the season has been winning against Fleetwood, and being with my best friends on the field together as one.” Sophomore midfielder Mia Reader agreed, sharing, “I loved winning against Fleetwood, it was such an exciting game.”
Each player brings something special to the field through her position. Fornwalt explained the importance of her role as sweeper, “It is a very fun position because you have to know the game to play there. You must be able to judge the game, intercept or tackle the ball, and your decision making must be on point or it could lead to a goal.”
Reader, who plays center midfield, enjoys the challenge of being involved all over the field. “I love it because there is so much to do and help the team. I can be a box-to-box player and play defense and offense,” she said. Similarly, sophomore midfielder Lillian Petrie appreciates the freedom her position allows. “I like the freedom of moving on the field and having some control over what happens next,” she explained.
Motivation and teamwork also play a huge role in the Lady Hawks’ success. Petrie noted that music and food are often key in getting the team hyped before games. She also described the team in one word: hope. “We always believe in winning and in each other no matter what,” Petrie said. Reader added that the team’s biggest strength is their ability to move the ball well and stay creative on the field, keeping opponents on their toes.
But beyond wins and strategies, what stands out most about this year’s team is their bond. Fornwalt described the Lady Hawks in one word: family. “We all love each other and we are very united in what we do. We make sure that we are always on our best game and that we come together in the hard times and stay strong in the difficult times.”
As the season continues, the Lady Hawks are determined to stay strong, work together, and make their school proud. Students and fans can look forward to more exciting games and memorable moments as the team pushes forward through the fall.
