This month’s football spotlight shines on sophomore Waylon Gaffney, who plays right guard on offense and nose guard on defense. Waylon first started playing flag football around the ages of 2 to 4, inspired by his dad and his encouraging football-loving family.
Outside of football, Waylon enjoys training to get stronger and better. When he trains, it usually means hitting the gym, doing drills on the field, and running to build stamina. He likes to stay busy and make sure he is focused on what he needs to get done. He also spends time watching the films so he can learn from past games and be ready for the next week, showing how serious he is about always being on his game
Waylon says that the game is about emotion and intensity. He admits to getting pretty fired up before a game, sometimes even getting mad because of how hyped he is to play. He also mentioned that one of the challenges of football is staying in shape, learning all the plays, and always having to be locked in with the team every single game. He balances school and football by planning his week ahead, staying disciplined with time, and grinding both on the field and in class. He values being a part of the team and how it brings everyone together to work towards winning. His favorite thing about his teammates is not just how hard they play, but all the fun they have off the field. Outside of football he and his teammates enjoy hanging out, eating, and creating good memories together.
Looking forward, Waylon has set goals for this season like beating Schuylkill Valley and finishing with a winning record. After high school, he hopes to join an Army college and take on coaching, maybe even a line coach, for a high school team. Combining his-leadership with the love he has for the sport. Waylon credits his parents and his grandparents as his biggest supporters, always encouraging him on and off the field. Keep your eyes out for #54 Waylon Gaffney.
