Balancing academics and athletics is no small task for student athletes. Between full school days, after school practices, and late-night games, they often face the challenge of managing their limited time, trying to excel in school and in sports.
Lydia Fultz is a junior who runs in cross country and track. She spends a few hours every day at practice, but on meet days she is pretty much busy all night.
Norah Davey is another junior who plays tennis, basketball, and softball. She said her sports take up almost 13 hours during the week and 20 hours on weekends.
Despite the pressure, many athletes learn to adapt through careful planning, determination, and strong work ethic. Lydia says she tries to manage her time by doing work during school on meet days so she has less to do when she gets home late. Norah does the same thing. She gets her school work done during study halls and flex periods so she has less to worry about after school. Student athletes like these girls show that with balance and determination, success is possible in the classroom and in their sport.
