Recently, the town of Hamburg hosted the 22nd annual Taste of Hamburger Festival. The event, which took place on August 30th, celebrates the creation of the hamburger and allows people to taste different foods from vendors. Many students attended the local festival, and some participated as vendors.
The festival began as a four-block event to celebrate 100 years of the hamburger. It has since expanded to have eight blocks worth of food and activities, according to the Taste of Hamburg-er Festival Guide. The Our Town Foundation, an organization dedicated to the renewal and preservation of Hamburg’s history, as stated by HamburgPa, hosted the event and helped fund it with sponsors at an estimated cost of $100,000 while also providing free admission. With the popularity of the event, the next one is already planned at a proposed date of September 5th, 2026, following the tradition of hosting it on the Saturday before Labor Day.
While the main focus of the festival is hamburgers, vendors also sell other food along with merchandise to add variety. Moreover, activities and entertainment are offered to engage visitors throughout the day, with notable entertainment including live music. With the scale of the event, parking became an issue for latecomers. Many people parked their vehicles on the grass or in parking lots at shops. Also, the locality of the festival allowed students to participate. Students from HAHS’s Student Council oversaw a stand that sold water and soda.
The Hamburger Festival was largely successful in achieving its goal of celebrating the cultural significance of the hamburger. Furthermore, it highlighted the character of Hamburg as a community and how it can come together to support a valued tradition. There is little doubt as to whether the annual tradition will continue, though contributing to the event, whether through time or resources, will help keep the experience alive in the future.
