The month of September is filled with many exciting things that lots of people look forward to. Under a broad label, this is known as the autumn equinox that brings cool weather and lots of activities leading up to the spooky season. There is also a common debate between what this season should be referred to as, given there are two names that can be used interchangeably: autumn or fall.
Being on the middle of the spectrum, Mason Thomas has decided that the way he refers to this season depends on the context of the situation. “I’ll often say fall since it feels more casual, but in more professional settings I will use autumn since it carries a more sophisticated tone,” Mason explains with how he views this topic of discussion. He believes that depending on the audience and situation that his decision is influenced by that in general. He also says, “I don’t believe there is a right or wrong way to address the season,” claiming that it is all on preference and they both are correct in the sense of what it means.
Another student who believes that there is no right or wrong way but does have a preference in how she addresses it, Brielle Cox says, “I like to call it autumn because it just sounds more aesthetically pleasing.” She believes that this term holds more of a seasonal vibe, reminding her of orange leaves and pumpkins. However when being asked about the four seasons, it flows much more easily for her to refer to it as fall. Nevertheless, she has no real preference.
Arianna Naranjo is one student that is very passionate about sticking with calling this season autumn, claiming that, “Mr. Geisinger told us it’s called that and it stuck with me.” He made it very clear that it is scientifically called the autumnal equinox, and even after three years, she has still remembered that. Even though she believes that the terms are both correct and it depends on the tone that someone wants to convey, she does not want to change her ways as she enjoys the more formal or old fashioned way rather than the more common and American style.
Even though it may not seem like a very big deal, it was a very big deal for Mr. Geisinger to make it clear to his students that autumn was the more accurate term. However it all comes down to preference.
