This spring, Java Jam was held on April 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. There were multiple singers and musicians from every grade at the high school, even some teachers. The event is run by Mr. Laughlin and Mr. Haegele. Along with just the performers, the LEO Club helped sell food and drinks. They sold various types of cookies, brownies, cookie bars, and pretzels. They sold drinks such as water, hot chocolate, coffee, and assorted tea. All of the desserts were made by LEO Club members.
Freshman Samantha Gartner helped bake and sell during both winter and spring. The first time in the winter, she and Maya Fultz made cookie butter cheesecake bars, and during the spring they made red velvet Oreo cookies. Besides just baking she helped hand people their food and drinks and helped give them their change. Her favorite part overall with Java Jam is being able to hear and watch all of the performers. Overall she looks forward to helping next winter.
Another freshman, Rylee Strunk, helped bake for both the winter and spring. She made cookie bars both times. They consist of graham cracker crumbs, sweet condensed milk, butter, peanut butter chips, and chocolate chips. Overall, she thinks the recipe is fairly easy to make, but she did have to estimate the baking time. Her favorite part is seeing the final product of her dessert. She also looks forward to helping bake next year.
One other freshman, Maya Fultz, helped sell both times and helped bake in the winter. She helped Samantha bake the cheesecake bars. When she was selling, she helped with handing out the food. Since she had helped in the winter, she felt very comfortable when signing up as she was prepared. Overall, her favorite part was also watching the performers, she was even a singer this spring and last winter. And she will also be doing it next year too.
Overall LEO Club sold a lot of desserts and drinks as they made around $130 dollars. It is an amazing experience to both help sell food during Java Jam and to sing at it. Both things give a lot of opportunities to students to help them acquire skills in the future.
