As the month changes to February and Valentine’s day rolls around, the Gay Straight Alliance club at Hamburg Area High School has a tradition for six years. Handing out little cards made by the GSA club members to students in the school. Each of the cards has, “Have a wonderful Valentine’s day from GSA” written on it.
While this tradition has been the same for about six years, they have decided to switch it up a bit and add a lollipop with every card. This is a relatively new decision as this will be only the second year they are adding lollipops. This was originally a suggestion from Landon Poulios to make receiving these cards brighten up students’ day a bit more. Landon says, “Everyone enjoys a sweet treat, and it seemed boring to just have paper.”
Each year the students would receive the cards in their homeroom. The cards would get handed out to homeroom teachers to pass out to the students, however this year due to the bad weather leaving students at home for most of the week they have decided to do it differently. This year the students in GSA are carrying the cards around with them to hand them out to those who want them.
GSA does this each year to help students feel important, loved, and included. They like to focus on the little things like this to spread as much joy and positivity to the school as possible. The members of GSA cannot wait to see the smiles on peoples faces after receiving their card and lollipop.
