Baking around the holidays is an activity enjoyed by many. Whether these treats are for oneself or others, it is tradition for most to bake this time of year. There is nothing like home-baked goods that families have enjoyed for generations.
Grace Cromyak, a senior at HAHS, enjoys baking around Christmas every year because she looks forward to decorating cookies and showing her family. The main treats she bakes are sugar cookies and vanilla box cakes. The cookies are her favorite because they give her total creative freedom to decorate however she wants. Even if she makes a mistake decorating, there is no stress because she knows that they will get eaten anyway and still taste good. Usually, Grace will bake on Christmas Eve, but she will also bake with her mom whenever they take a day to do so. Regardless of when she bakes, Grace always bakes with her mom because she helps the whole process go smoothly. Grace normally only bakes for her house, however, if people are visiting she will make cookies and offer them for people to enjoy.
Christmas and other holidays bring families together because of tradition. This is why I look forward to the holiday season and baking. I mostly bake with my stepmom and aunt. At my house, I normally bake chocolate chip cookies. But I always look forward to trying new recipes. Like this past year, my stepmom and I tried a new sugar cookie recipe that will probably become a regular for us. When I am with my aunt, we make many different kinds of cookies. Some of these recipes were my grandmother’s and it is nice to see these passed down through generations. Many family members enjoy my aunt’s baking, so we always make extra to give away.
