Zachary Spatz, nicknamed Zach, is a junior at HAHS whose long-time interest in vehicles fostered his hobby of collecting cars and auto parts. When he was younger, he was first drawn to vehicles and liked how they were represented in media and merchandise like Fast and Furious and Hot Wheels, respectively. While he collected miniature cars at first, his hobby developed further in his teenage years when he was eager to drive. Zach learned quickly and soon began a car collection, growing it in a short time.
Zach currently owns eight cars which he displays in his driveway. He is not concerned with damaging them as he believes he is a responsible driver with 3 years of driving experience. He maintains them through the occasional wash and drives them frequently, sometimes bringing friends or family. Moreover, he enjoys playing music of various genres in his car, like pop and country. However, Zach does not trust anyone else driving his car, even if they are close, to avoid unnecessary damage.
It might be difficult to imagine a high schooler owning eight vehicles, more than four times the national average according to Consumer Shield. However, Zach funds his expensive hobby by working at a car wash and as a mechanic. Despite his heavy workload, he enjoys both positions as he gets to work with something he loves. Also, he often buys cars at a low price to fix them and sell them for financial gain. Recently, he repaired a 2002 Ford Focus, sold it, and profited from the sale.
If Zach had kept every car he owned, he would have 12 compared to the eight parked in his driveway. He currently owns a 2011 Subaru Impresso, a 1989 Honda Civic, a 1999 Dodge Neon, and a 2008 F-250, and his favorite is the Subaru because he says it is his most reliable and fun car to drive. “It’s my dream car,” explained Zach. As such, he drives it all the time and washes it once a week.
Zach’s dedication and love of cars has helped him build his collection quickly, and he never plans to stop growing his collection. Moreover, he is happy with his lifestyle but is always looking to improve. His hard work for his interest shows how a strong focus can help a person achieve their goals without delay and increase one’s life satisfaction.
