On November 22, 23, and 24, the Hamburg Area High School presented its musical, The Wizard of Oz, which is a classic and one that the whole family can enjoy. For this particular show, many CGI and special effects were needed, as well as a lot of props and set pieces.
A sophomore, Alexis Freeland, was both a costumer and manual crew person. “A costumer is a person who helps with any costume needs throughout the show,” said Alexis. This could include quickly stitching up a hole or gluing a pair of fake glasses together. Her favorite part about being a costumer is being able to help design the costumes. “It was really fun helping Ms. Beth picks out the capes and other materials,” said Alexis. As well as being a costumer, she also helped physically with moving set pieces. One of the main set pieces she moved was Aunt Em and Uncle Henry’s home which then flipped into Dorothy’s bedroom. Alexis said she really liked moving set pieces. “It was really nice knowing that without my help, it wouldn’t be fully complete,” said Alexis. As fun as it was though, she also said it was stressful. If something was off by even the tiniest bit, it would have ruined the whole scene. She also handled props, which included handing them out to kids and setting them for the next scene.
Overall, the crew was fun and exciting for Alexis. As stressful as it was, she enjoyed every second of it. “I’ll definitely miss my seniors, especially the ones I saw and talked with backstage,” said Alexis. She wishes the best of luck to all the seniors wherever they go and wishes the director, Mr. Barry, a fun and calm retirement. Alexis is excited for the next musical season and can not wait to see the next three crowds of the next show.
